Non-motorized transport modes are often considered as vital elements of sustainable transport. Their emissions of pollutants and noise, and the accident risks they pose for other road users are very low. Thus, a high share of non-motorized transport modes would certainly contribute to a more attractive urban environment.
Practical bike policy is mainly focused on expanding cycle networks infrastructure to change travel behavior for all cyclists. Often several general communication methods are used to influence the behavior of a specific group. Via the GPS tracking technology we are able to get specific (valuable) cyclist behavior information. With the cooperation between different entities in the project team participants will be on the one hand recruited using a smartphone application based on a rewarding principle and on the other implementing in cycling encouraging projects (e.g. the introduction of the Pedelec by the province of Brabant).
This project will contribute to better understanding cycling in order to improve bike infrastructure, cyclist safety, policy development, communication and more cohesion between government (municipalities) and cyclist. This all will lead to an impulse in modal shift (car tot bike) and sustainable infrastructure.
