The NISTO-partners defined nine pilot projects - considering the five key principles safety, economy, mobility, environment and customer satisfaction. The pilots are finished/almost finished and have been financed by other projects. They will help to develop the toolkit when being evaluated. The feedback of these pilot projects will directly have influence on the toolkit of the project. This developement of an integrated approach is necessary to propose a concept of smart mobility. Pilot: A simulator for exchanging and managing imperfect information in Inter-Vehicle Communication using belief functions.
Cars are nowadays by far the most common means of transport, but this popularity leads to safety and environmental problems. One solution to improve safety and driver comfort consists in allowing vehicles to exchange information about events on the road such as accidents and traffic jams.
One of the objectives of this project is to find out what the triggers are to make a city more bike friendly and in order to fulfill this objective surveys are organised by each partner of the project to encourage people to use their bike more often. The results of the surveys and tools developed through Bike Friendly Cities project will be disseminated through the NISTO project.
This project relates to investment in hybrid bus technology bringing low carbon and sustainable transport in the West Midlands. The new fleet will reduce our customer’s carbon footprint by 30%, look great and have the latest on board advancements in customer experience including audio/visual technology to alert those with hearing and sight problems when their stop is approaching.
NWM is a partnership brand, developed by Centro, Districts and transport operators. A key output of the initiative has been the introduction of INTERCONNECT, an integrated public transport information and wayfinding system for Birmingham City Centre.

Living Lab Olympus puts the focus on sharing electric vehicles
Olympus examines the possible role of electric vehicles within the field of 'networked mobility', a network designed to promote mobility solutions. Via an open service platform, information about vehicles, charging infrastructure, power consumption, modes of payment, traffic... will be collected and evaluated.
In addition to the nine pilot projects NISTO is testing the toolkit with new mobility projects, the demonstration projects. Hereby the five demonstration projects - one from each region - will be observed and evaluated with the toolkit from right at the beginning.
i54 is a 220 acre (98 hectare) site at Wobaston Road on the boundary of South Staffordshire and Wolverhampton which is under development as a technology-based business park. The project is attempting to mitigate the impact of a large scale new development at the periphery of a key regional centre within the constraints of an existing urban transport network where there is limited scope for increasing highway capacity.
The guest ticket is a cooperation project between the different tourism destinations in the entire region of Nordhessen with hotels as most important partner: Guests that stay at any hotel in the region will receive a guest ticket offering entrance to cultural institutions, recreational facilities and a public transport ticket for RegioTram, trams, buses and rental bikes.
Boulogne-sur-Mer is a hilly town and the support of electric bikes is an important issue to encourage alternative mobility. Therefore, a hub will be implemented near the train station to enable intermodal mobility and an easy change between the different transport modes.
This project will contribute to better understanding cycling in order to improve bike infrastructure, cyclist safety, policy development, communication and more cohesion between government (municipalities) and cyclist. This all will lead to an impulse in modal shift (car tot bike) and sustainable infrastructure.
SIMS aims to support the local and regional mobility policy and renew movement habits and experiments on mobility plane with the aid of innovative smartphone and GPS technology, developed by the University of Ghent. This technology makes it possible to collect data on the trajectories of pedestrians , cyclists, public transport users and motorists and helps us to solve an important gap in the field of traffic information.
